A psychological-diagnostic assessment is performed in order to evaluate an individuals psychological, emotional, and behavioural functioning, as well as their personality, in order to provide assistance in understanding their problems and to develop treatment recommendations. If appropriate, a diagnosis is provided.
If your child, or you, are struggling in one or more areas of learning and are struggling to meet academic demands, a careful and thorough assessment is needed. Psychoeducational assessments reveal how an individual learns and can provide a diagnosis of a Learning Disorder (LD), Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD), Developmental Disability, Intellectual Disability, or other psychoemotional, social, or behavioural conditions that can affect learning. Exceptional cognitive ability (giftedness) that meets the criteria for high IQ which has been adopted by most Canadian school boards can be identified. All Ontario school boards require evidence of very superior intelligence on standardized intelligence tests in combination with academic testing completed by a member of the College of Psychologists of Ontario (CPO). In some cases, lower cognitive ability that meets the requirement for an Intellectual Disability diagnosis is required in order for individuals to be eligible to receive supports through the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) and Developmental Services Ontario (DSO). In these cases, psychoeducational testing is combined with tests for adaptive functioning and independent living.
A psychoeducational assessment is combined with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) testing when symptoms of ASD are queried and/or suspected. At Coppa Care this testing utilizes the current 'gold standard' (ASD specific tests; activity-based assessment including structured and semi-structured tasks that involve social interaction, evaluation of communication skills, and imaginative use of materials) in assessing those with suspected ASD.
Lawyers, insurers, and employers often seek independent evaluations to aid in ensuring access to benefits, verifying claims, or determining whether a person is a good fit for a given job. These assessments sometimes follow personal or psychological injury (i.e., Acquired Brain Injury, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder) that occurs following an accident (motor vehicle accident or other) or medical conditions. As independent evaluators, Psychologists remain objective and provide evidence-based conclusions.
